SUMMARY:Classical Café for Primary Schools: Aurora Strings
DESCRIPTION:Join Musinc and Aurora Strings for a 50-minute interactive concert\, exploring music from films and video games. \nYou’ll learn more about the individual instruments\, as well as how different musical techniques are used to represent moods and emotions. \nThis concert will support the following areas of the Model Music Curriculum: \n– Musicianship: singing in unison\, performing actions alongside song and moving in time to the beat \n– Listening: a live performance of music from different traditions and composers\, learning about the instruments as well as the stories\, origins\, history and social context of the music \nAurora Strings are the North East’s leading string quartet with years of experience in performing for concerts\, private and corporate events and recording session. They were recently selected by Feva to regularly perform for their Candlelight Concerts in venues such as Durham Cathedral\, Sunderland Minster and The Discovery Museum\, Newcastle where programmes have included Hans Zimmer\, Queen\, Pink Floyd\, Taylor Swift\, ABBA\, Coldplay\, Adele and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. \nThis event is open to school groups and home educating families and has been designed with KS2 children in mind\, although is suitable for all primary aged children. \nThis concert will include live BSL interpretation. \nPlaces are free. SUMMARY:Workshop: The End Times
DESCRIPTION:An introduction to making music with electronics using an apocalyptic musical blackboard! \nDuration: 90 minutes (including a 15 minute break).\nParticipants: Aimed at young adults (11-18) with some experience of music\, no experience of technology necessary. Up to 16 participants (8 per blackboard)\nDelivery Team: Liza Bec (Facilitator)\, Harry Bassett (Facilitator)\, Enzo Samuel (Sound Engineer) \nStructure: \n\nIntroductory performance (5 minutes)\nHow does the blackboard work? Intro to contact mics\, chalk\, blackboard paint and more! (10 minutes)\nSound and visual design using touchpads and MIDI keyboards to control different elements of the blackboard sound – tone\, reverb\, visuals\, pitch (15 minutes)\nCreation of original blackboard pieces\, working with a facilitator\, in 2 small groups. (30 minutes)\nSharing and feedback (15 minutes)\n\nWorkshop Outcomes: \n\n\n\nEnhanced Understanding of Interactive Sound Design\nParticipants will gain hands-on experience with contact mics and blackboard chalk to create dynamic sounds. They will learn how to manipulate various sound elements (such as tone\, pitch\, and reverb) using touchpads and MIDI keyboards.\nIncreased Confidence in Creative Collaboration\nParticipants will collaborate to create original blackboard sound pieces. This will encourage teamwork and inspire creative thinking\, allowing participants to experiment with different techniques and to confidently share unique ideas.\nDevelopment of Technical Skills\nParticipants develop skills in using technology such as touchpads\, MIDI keyboards\, and movement-sensitive wristbands to control sound and visuals.\nIncreased Understanding of the Intersection of Music\, Visual Art\, and Technology\nParticipants will explore how music\, visual art\, and technology can intersect in an interactive\, creative environment. This will deepen their understanding of sound design and inspire new ways of thinking about how art and technology can be integrated.\n\n\n\nAccessibility: The workshop is fully accessible and can be BSL or audio described\, please ask for further details. Real chalk is provided for use during the workshop. DESCRIPTION:What happens when you plug a blackboard into a computer and use it to make music? Come and experience Liza Bec’s original apocalyptic coming of age tale featuring a magical musical blackboard. \n\nThe End Times is a novel and an album in one\, a theatrical soundscape with one foot in the supernatural and one foot in science. \nLiza will use their self built cyborg recorder\, the roborecorder\, featured in the Museum of Science and Industry\, to control the sounds made by the blackboard from afar. Listen as haunting vocals\, fragments of spoken word and soaring winds swoop over driving synths and polyrhythms. \nNarrated by David Ryder Prangley (Rachel Stamp\, Adam Ant). \nThis concert will support the following areas of the Model Music Curriculum:\n– Musicianship: singing in unison\, performing actions alongside song and moving in time to the beat\n– Listening: a live performance of music from different traditions and composers\, learning about the instruments as well as the stories\, origins\, history and social context of the music \nThis event is open to school groups and home educating families and has been designed with KS2 children in mind\, although is open to any young person aged 7+. \n\n\n\nTo book your seats please email musinc@middlesbrough.gov.uk with a booking form. \nA free\, electronic music making workshop is also available at 4.30pm – 6pm aimed at ages 11-18. \nSupported by the National Lottery and Arts Council England.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 5th November 2024\, 1.30pm – 2.30pm\, Middlesbrough Town Hall\, Free \nIn the first concert of our 2024-25 series\, musicians Sarah Paterson and Jeremy Harbottle present a musical journey: from sadness\, joy\, and excitement\, through to relaxation and peace. \nJeremy (cello) and Sarah (harp) will perform a 50 minute interactive concert exploring moods in music. This concert will support the following areas of the Model Music Curriculum:\n– Musicianship: singing in unison\, performing actions alongside song and moving in time to the beat\n– Listening: a live performance of music from different traditions and composers\, learning about the instruments as well as the stories\, origins\, history and social context of the music \nThis event is open to school groups and home educating families and has been designed with KS2 children in mind\, although is suitable for all primary aged children. \nAbout Jeremy\nAt the age of 14\, Jeremy attained grade 8 piano and cello\, and has won local young musician awards. He then undertook a diploma in piano\, gaining a scholarship to study cello with the Royal College of Music (alongside a chemistry degree at Imperial College London!). Now\, he teaches cello\, piano and singing\, is principal cellist of local orchestras\, and performs around the UK – including playing many of the major cello concertos as soloist. He has conducted numerous choral symphonic works as musical director of four choirs for over fifteen years. \nAbout Sarah\nSarah graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with a Bachelor of Music (Honours). During her time there she was selected for the BBC Philharmonic Professional Experience Scheme\, awarded the Dianne Bolton Prize\, and performed at the Natural History Museum\, Wigmore Hall and the Baltic Art Gallery. Sarah enjoys a freelance career spanning recording\, teaching\, orchestral\, chamber\, and solo playing; most recently recording Pines of Rome with Black Dyke Band and performing Debussy’s Danse Sacrée et Danse Profane with Skipton Camerata. \n  \nTo book your seats please email musinc@middlesbrough.gov.uk with a booking form. \nSee more in our Schools programme.
