The show will be narrated by Eleanor Mooney. \nThis concert will support the following areas of the Model Music Curriculum: \n– Musicianship: singing in unison\, performing actions alongside song and moving in time to the beat \n– Listening: a live performance of music from different traditions and composers\, learning about the instruments as well as the stories\, origins\, history and social context of the music \nThis concert will include live BSL interpretation. \nThis event is open to school groups and home educating families and has been designed with KS2 children in mind\, although is suitable for all primary aged children. \nPlaces are free. DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the rich landscapes of Indian classical music brought to you by the North East’s award-winning arts organisation GemArts. \nAkash Parekar began his journey with the sitar at the age of 18 in 2011\, and has since emerged as one of the most exciting talents among a new generation of British-born sitar players. With roots in Western classical and contemporary music\, Akash brings a fresh\, innovative voice to the instrument\, blending tradition with modern musical sensibilities. \nA dedicated disciple of renowned sitarist Roopa Panesar\, Akash has also been guided by esteemed musicians including Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE\, Ustad Harjinderpal Singh (disciple of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma)\, and Ustad Irshad Khan (disciple and son of Ustad Imrat Khan\, and nephew of Ustad Vilayat Khan). \nHis collaborative work spans a wide creative spectrum\, featuring projects with Zak Starkey (The Who\, Oasis)\, Mayur Navekar (Bandish Projekt)\, and Michael Tedstone (ManikeMusic)\, among others. Akash has performed at major venues and festivals—including Glastonbury—and is currently working on his highly anticipated debut album. \nJanan Sathiendran is a dynamic tabla player whose artistry is shaped by deep training in both Hindustani and Carnatic traditions. A student of Shri Sukhdeep Singh Dhanjal and Pandit Yogesh Samsi\, Janan grew up in London in a home enriched by diverse musical influences\, developing a refined instinct and adaptable style from a young age. \nHis versatility as a performer enables him to move effortlessly across genres: from accompanying Indian classical music and dance to performing Qawwali\, collaborating with Western classical ensembles\, and working in contemporary and urban music. DESCRIPTION:Middlesbrough Open Orchestra and Thursday Orchestra present ‘Past\, Present and Future’. \nExpect original compositions and group favourites\, new faces and old friends\, and a night of brilliant music. \nWe’re delighted to have Middlesbrough Open Orchestra back performing on home soil and are excited to welcome Thursday Orchestra for their debut performance. \nMiddlesbrough Open Orchestra is a collaboration between Musinc\, Beverley School\, Priory Woods School and Tees Valley Music Hub. Students from Beverley School and Priory Woods School have weekly music sessions in school as well as coming together regularly to play as an orchestra at Middlesbrough Town Hall. \nThe young people play music from a wide range of genres\, including classical\, contemporary and pop. They particularly enjoy creating soundscapes and original compositions alongside their orchestra leader\, Ben Hopkinson. \nSince its inception\, Middlesbrough Open Orchestra has been gaining both regional and national recognition for championing inclusive music making. The orchestra has performed at events such as Music For Youth’s Together For Music Festival 2025 in Birmingham\, Music & Drama Education Expo 2023 in London\, Music Mark National Conference 2022 and North East Culture Awards 2022 in Newcastle\, and Middlesbrough Council Civic Awards 2021. \nThursday Orchestra is a new ensemble for Disabled and Neurodivergent young musicians aged 16-25. The orchestra is a place for experienced and aspiring young musicians to come together and make music! The group meets weekly at Middlesbrough Town Hall\, and all musical instruments and abilities are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Gig School is an exciting 3 day opportunity for young people aged 12-17 to play\, rehearse and perform in a band setting. \nYoung musicians taking part will learn how to communicate with each other as a band\, learn about live music rehearsal\, set-up and soundcheck\, and performance techniques. They’ll perform in large bands\, as well as getting the chance to form ‘breakaway bands’ during the week. \nThe sessions are led by a team of 4 experienced tutors specialising in guitar\, bass\, keys\, drums and vocals. \nThis activity is open to young people aged 12-17 and we advise that young people playing instruments have some experience (beginner level to advanced). Singers of all abilities are welcome. \nSchedule\n• 10am – 3pm\, Tuesday 14th April\n• 10am – 3pm\, Wednesday 15th April\n• 10am – 6pm\, Thursday 16th April\, with the final showcase performance at 5pm\, open to friends and family of the young musicians. The showcase is expected to last an hour and no booking is required. \nTickets are £75 (+50p booking fee) for the 3 days. \nStaggered payment options are available. \nWe also have free bursaries available for families receiving benefits-related free school meals. Your place includes a packed lunch for those in receipt of benefits related free school meals. \nPlease arrive 10 – 15 minutes early to sign in and get settled. Children can bring their own packed lunch\, or a packed lunch can be provided on the day. \nThis event is part of Middlesbrough Council’s Bring It On! holiday programme\, funded by the Department for Education. \nBring It On! is the new name for the holiday activities and food (HAF) programme in Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland. Bring It On! runs during the school holidays to offer free\, fun activities and food to children and young people aged 5 to 16 years. DESCRIPTION:Musicians Alison Gill (piano)\, Clare Crinson (flute) and Deb Thorne (cello) perform together as Trio Aquarelle and present a tribute to mark the 200th anniversary of composer Carl Maria von Weber’s death. \nThe trio will also perform toe-tapping Spanish dances from Moritz Moszkowski and the dreamy French Impressionism of Philippe Gaubert’s Trois Aquarelles (Watercolours). \nAbout the musicians:\nThe members of Trio Aquarelle are recognised performers and educators based in the North East of England. \nClare Crinson studied the flute at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and holds an MA in Musicology from Durham University. She enjoys a varied career as a performer and educator. As well as solo and chamber recitals\, she performs regularly as an orchestral flautist with groups such as the International Film Music Orchestra\, the British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Mowbray Orchestra. Clare is joint Director of Music at Durham High School as well as teaching flute students of all ages\, including undergraduates at Durham University. \nDeb Thorne plays cello\, having studied music at Clare College\, Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. She was a member of the Royal Northern Sinfonia and now freelances on modern and baroque cello. \nAlison Gill is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music\, specialising as an accompanist and répétiteur. She collaborates regularly with the Chorus of the Royal Northern Sinfonia\, the Jervaulx Singers and as an accompanist in residence for Leeds Conservatoire\, Durham University and for the BBC Proms held at the Glasshouse International Centre for Music. There are so many career paths available in music and we want to highlight what young people can achieve in our area. \nOur panel of local professionals will reflect the huge variety of musical professions available\, inspiring young people to think more about careers around their strengths and interests and pursue a career in music. \nWe’ll also have a number of stalls from post-16 education providers for young people to discuss music education in college and beyond. \nThe event will be hosted by musician and BBC Introducing presenter Shakk. \n \nShakk – Musician and BBC Introducing NE Presenter \nBursting onto the scene in September 2018\, Shakk went on to sell out his e.p launch night in his hometown\, perform at the O2 Academy\, BBC Music The Biggest Weekend Fringe\, Twisterella & Lindisfarne festival\, and much more whilst gaining support from the likes of Bobby Friction from BBC Asian Network\, BBC Radio Introducing and becoming Ride Music Artist of the Year along the way. DESCRIPTION:Join our Summer Band for ages 8-16! \nWe’re inviting young musicians for 3 days of music making at Middlesbrough Town Hall\, as part of this summer’s holiday activities and food programme (HAF). Our band is open to all abilities\, including young people who have never played an instrument\, and all instruments (including non-orchestral). \nAfter you’ve signed up\, we’ll ask what instrument you play and for a description of your ability level so that we can make we have all the right music on the day. Don’t worry if you don’t read music – our tutors will be on hand during the day to support musicians who learn music through alternative methods. If you don’t play an instrument yet\, or can’t bring your instrument with you – you’ll be able to borrow one of ours. \nThroughout the 3 days our band will learn 4 songs\, as well as taking part in games\, crafting and other fun activities. \nOur Tutor Team\nBen – Guitar\, Bass\, Fretted Strings\, Piano\, Drums/Percussion\nSammy – Clarinet\, Saxophone\, other Wind & Strings\nChristina – Vocals\, Keyboards\, Violin & other Strings\nAlthough none of our team play brass instruments we will support brass players the best we can! \nActivities will take place from 10am-2pm on Monday 11th\, Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th August. \nThis event is part of Middlesbrough Council’s Bring It On! holiday programme\, funded by the Department for Education. \nBring It On! is the new name for the holiday activities and food (HAF) programme in Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland. DESCRIPTION:Amplify is a free performance opportunity for young people aged 12-18 in a friendly and supportive event space. \nPlaying in front of an audience can be intimidating. Amplify is for you if you’re a young musician looking to try something out on a smaller scale and develop your confidence in a more laid-back setting. \nWe encourage young individuals to play for their family\, friends\, and fellow young musicians. You will also get the opportunity to watch bands and soloists from the Bandjam group based at Middlesbrough Town Hall. \nAll genres of music are welcome; your performance doesn’t have to be a completed song and could be music you’ve been working on recently and would like others to hear. \nOur MC will be present to offer their knowledge of the music industry and manage the performers during the event. \nHow to join as a performer \nPlease fill in this sign up form and we’ll be in touch to confirm your performance slot. \nParents and guardians will need to complete forms on behalf of under 18s. \nYou are required to bring your own instruments and cables for the performance. If you’ve always wanted to sing in a choir\, give it a try and you are guaranteed to leave feeling uplifted! \nNorth East Opera\, formerly Streetwise Opera\, is a group for adults who identify as facing social isolation\, including people who are or have been homeless. Intro to contact mics\, chalk\, blackboard paint and more! (10 minutes)\nSound and visual design using touchpads and MIDI keyboards to control different elements of the blackboard sound – tone\, reverb\, visuals\, pitch (15 minutes)\nCreation of original blackboard pieces\, working with a facilitator\, in 2 small groups. (30 minutes)\nSharing and feedback (15 minutes)\n\nWorkshop Outcomes: \n\n\n\nEnhanced Understanding of Interactive Sound Design\nParticipants will gain hands-on experience with contact mics and blackboard chalk to create dynamic sounds. They will learn how to manipulate various sound elements (such as tone\, pitch\, and reverb) using touchpads and MIDI keyboards.\nIncreased Confidence in Creative Collaboration\nParticipants will collaborate to create original blackboard sound pieces. This will encourage teamwork and inspire creative thinking\, allowing participants to experiment with different techniques and to confidently share unique ideas.\nDevelopment of Technical Skills\nParticipants develop skills in using technology such as touchpads\, MIDI keyboards\, and movement-sensitive wristbands to control sound and visuals.\nIncreased Understanding of the Intersection of Music\, Visual Art\, and Technology\nParticipants will explore how music\, visual art\, and technology can intersect in an interactive\, creative environment. This will deepen their understanding of sound design and inspire new ways of thinking about how art and technology can be integrated.\n\n\n\nAccessibility: The workshop is fully accessible and can be BSL or audio described\, please ask for further details. Real chalk is provided for use during the workshop. Come and experience Liza Bec’s original apocalyptic coming of age tale featuring a magical musical blackboard. \n\nThe End Times is a novel and an album in one\, a theatrical soundscape with one foot in the supernatural and one foot in science. \nLiza will use their self built cyborg recorder\, the roborecorder\, featured in the Museum of Science and Industry\, to control the sounds made by the blackboard from afar. Featuring choreography by Becky Namgauds and narrated by David Ryder Prangley (Rachel Stamp\, Adam Ant) \nLiza is an innovative contemporary performer\, composer\, producer and multimedia narrative author. They built the roborecorder based on their lived experience of music-triggered epilepsy. They were awarded the Fusion Fund by Help Musicians UK to create audiovisual EP INNERVATE. In 2024 they held residencies at Britten Pears Arts and Paraorchestra. They produce serial fiction podcast Spiral Dial. \nAbout Classical Café\nClassical Café is a series of Sunday afternoon performances at Middlesbrough Town Hall.
