Gig School is an exciting 3 day opportunity for young people aged 12-17 to play, rehearse and perform in a band setting.

Young musicians taking part will learn how to communicate with each other as a band, learn about live music rehearsal, set-up and soundcheck, and performance techniques. They’ll perform in large bands, as well as getting the chance to form ‘breakaway bands’ during the week.

The sessions are led by a team of 4 experienced tutors specialising in guitar, bass, keys, drums and vocals.

This activity is open to young people aged 12-17 and we advise that young people playing instruments have some experience (beginner level to advanced). Singers of all abilities are welcome.

Schedule
• 10am – 3pm, Monday 28th July
• 10am – 3pm, Tuesday 29th July
• 10am – 6pm, Wednesday 30th July, with the final showcase performance at 5pm, open to friends and family of the young musicians. The showcase is expected to last an hour and no booking is required.

Tickets are £75 (+50p booking fee) for the 3 days.

Staggered payment options are available.

We also have limited bursaries available for anyone facing financial barriers. All places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please contact us on musinc@middlesbrough.gov.uk to apply for a free place.

Age appropriateness:

This event is open to ages 12-17. Our facilitators are experienced in providing activities for all young people, including young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Pushchairs and prams:

Due to Middlesbrough Town Hall’s fire regulation policies pushchairs, prams and car seats must be left in our dedicated ‘buggy parking’ zone on the ground floor carriageway and cannot be taken into any of the event spaces. Unfortunately, we cannot take responsibility for items left there, but we do our best to keep an eye on them.

Relaxed setting:

Most of our events take place in a relaxed environment, and have the following features:

  • There’ll be lower volume levels throughout the event
  • Our spaces have consistent lighting, with low level auditorium lights on throughout
  • Our musicians and facilitators have relaxed attitude to noise and moving around the space
  • A quiet, chill out space will be available should you need a break
  • Our younger visitors can find a busy venue and loud musical activities quite overwhelming. A limited number of ear defenders are available from the Box Office – by the main entrance on Albert Street – see us as early as possible to secure a pair.
  • Free drinking water will be available
