Thomas’ work placement
Middlesbrough College student Thomas recently completed his work placement at Musinc over the last two weeks. Thomas previously attended Bandjam at Middlesbrough Town Hall, and recently got the chance to discover how things work behind-the-scenes at Musinc. If you’re interested in a work placement in music, read the blog below to find out more.

During my placement with Musinc, I was given a few roles that helped me experience different aspects of music that I wouldn’t have seen alone. I was tasked with supporting groups who focused on helping musicians with special needs. I found this extremely rewarding to be a part of, seeing the joy and confidence that music can bring out of people no matter their background or issues.
I was also given the chance to help behind the scenes in Bandjam. Seeing how they set-up and the amount of work they put into helping these groups is inspiring and gave me a real appreciation for the work that goes into the group. I was able to help out with both the Junior and the Senior groups, seeing a glimpse into the process of teaching a large variety of people – something I am interested in.

Another thing that was amazing was the amount of focus they have on you. During one of the days I was at the Town Hall, I was asked what I wanted to get out of my time with Musinc, to which they did everything they could to make it happen. I mentioned learning about music tech/setup and was given a full tour of Musinc’s professional music studio. I was shown how everything works, how to keep a studio well prepared, and the many different ways to keep the expensive equipment safe.
My favourite highlight of the placement was being tasked with setting up a stage for an orchestra. I was tasked with setting a drum kit up, setting up instruments, tables and keyboards – all by myself. I found this challenging but it gave me a massive sense of achievement and confidence in my abilities.
This placement showed me the true importance of music and its impact on everyone, no matter their background. I’m grateful for the chance to be part of such a welcoming environment and it has greatly impacted my appreciation for music.
